FAQs

Why is handcrafted soap better than store bought soap?

Typically, store-bought soaps have had their glycerin removed.  Glycerin is a natural skin emollient that attracts water and maintains moisture in your skin.  Glycerin is then used by these companies to produce other products such as creams and lotions.  Handcrafted  soaps, on the other hand, are made with natural vegetable oils and butters that contain vitamins, minerals and skin loving qualities that make natural soap so good for your skin. When these natural vegetable oils, butters and lye/water solution are combined,  glycerin splits away from the fatty acids in the vegetable oils and mixes together with water forming a syrup like liquid. This liquid glycerin remains in all-natural soap.  As a result, your skin will not feel tight and dry in fact, it will feel clean, moisturized and glowing!

Why does my soap have imperfections?

Handcrafted soap is made in small batches that are mixed, poured and cut by hand.  No two bars will be exactly the same.  The temperature of the ingredients can make the colors and consistency vary from batch to batch.  Small air pockets can result from pouring a thick soap batter. You may also find a few small gray areas on the surface of your soap known as “soap ash”.  This results when a new soap meets air or has a rapid temperature change and will completely disappear the first time you use your soap.   None of these issues affects the quality or longevity of your soap.

What is Cold Process soap?

Cold Process soap is  soap made from the combination of oils and sodium hydroxide (lye) and water which causes a reaction known as saponification. During the saponification process, lye is allowed to be neutralized with out any outside source of heat. Glycerin is produced as a by product and all of the ingredients including the addition of pure essential oils and botanicals are allowed to retain their all-natural qualities and benefits that make Cold Process the best quality bar of soap.

What do you recommend for dry skin?

Most people use commercial soap which leaves your skin dry and tight, stripping your skin of its natural balance.  Try any one of our handcrafted soaps and experience the difference that the all natural vegetable oils, butters and glycerin bring to your bathing experience.  Once you do we’re sure you will be thrilled with the results and you’ll be ready to choose all of your favorites from the combinations of natural ingredients we offer including the wonderful variety of scents provided by pure essential oils.

What is the shelf life of your products?

Soaps will last a year or more, however, we recommend you use your new soaps within 6 months of purchase. Remember they are made from all-natural oils and contain no preservatives such as parabens and phthalates.  You may also find that scents from pure essential oils can diminish over time. Keeping soap dry between uses will prolong the life of your bar.

As for our body care products please consult each individual product page for more specific expiry dates.

In order to extend the life of our natural products store them in a cool dark place away from humidity.

Why is lye used in handcrafted soap?

While sodium hydroxide (lye) is caustic in its active state by the time you get your hands on our soap it is no longer present.  Lye is necessary  for the chemical reaction (called “saponification”) that turns oils into soap.  Once this reaction is complete you no longer have lye or oil, you have natural soap.
